Professor Oleg Nikolaevich Lopatin

Mineralogist, gemologist and REE specialist

Professor Oleg Nikolaevich Lopatin is a distinguished Russian geologist with extensive expertise in mineralogy, petrography, and lithology. A graduate of Kazan State University (1986) with a degree in Geological Engineering, he has dedicated his career to advancing the study of minerals and their crystal chemistry. Beginning as an engineer and later assistant at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrography of KSU, he went on to earn his Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences in 1993 and subsequently his Doctor of Sciences in 2010.

Currently a Professor at the Department of Mineralogy and Lithology of Kazan Federal University, Prof. Lopatin’s research focuses on the crystal chemistry of minerals, nanotechnology applications in geology, and the study of jewelry and ornamental stones. Widely recognized for his contributions to geological sciences, he has played a key role in both academic research and the mentoring of future geologists.

Beyond his academic career, he is passionate about hunting, fishing, and the collection of decorative minerals, reflecting his lifelong dedication to nature and the study of Earth’s resources.
